Four Pillars of Digital Wellbeing

The Path to a Thriving Digital Workplace

As we adapt to new digital tools, a balanced relationship with technology becomes crucial.
Organizations now understand that digital well-being boosts employee happiness, productivity, and long-term success. In the coming decades, digital well-being will likely become a top priority for organizations worldwide. Four key pillars form the foundation for digital well-being: digital means, skills, support, and behavior.

Yorizon and Leiden University analyzed data on the digital well-being of 487 Dutch individuals aged 18 and older, collected during the first months of 2019.

Pillar 1: Digital Means Influence Happiness and Productivity

Having access to reliable and efficient digital tools and technologies is the cornerstone of promoting digital wellbeing. Our research shows that employees who are satisfied with their digital resources report greater happiness at work and higher productivity. Employees comfortable using digital tools are more likely to enjoy their work and be more productive. The average knowledge worker spends much of their workday at a computer and free time on screens.

Glitches or outdated digital resources lead to frustration, stress, and fatigue.

Pillar 2: Digital Support Makes People Feel grounded and connected

Easy access to digital support channels, like helpdesks or knowledgeable colleagues, greatly reduces frustration and stress during difficulties. Digital support can enhance individuals’ self-esteem and reduce anxiety or apprehension related to using digital devices or software. Lastly, connecting with others who can offer guidance and support can have a positive impact on mental health by providing a support network and promoting social interaction.

Pillar 3: Digital Skills, enthusiasm and creativity

People not only need the resources to work happily and productively, but they also need the right digital skills. When users understand how to leverage digital devices and software to their advantage, they can harness technology’s potential to enhance productivity, communication, and creativity. This is also what our research confirms. Therefore, investing in training and development programs that focus on digital skills can have a positive impact on the well-being and performance of employees. Even better, giving people time and space to work on their digital skills themselves. Experience shows that intrinsic motivation and practical application drive individuals to improve in this area. Our research revealed that 63% of the Dutch population would like to improve their digital skills.

Pillar 4: Digital Behavior – Cultivating Healthy Habits for Well-being

Unhealthy digital behavior, such as excessive smartphone use, leads to higher levels of stress, reduced concentration, and lower productivity. We also see that individuals who spend a lot of time on their smartphones are more likely to feel fatigued and irritable. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly urgent for people to develop healthy digital habits. Not only to perform better at work or experience more happiness but also to maintain mental health. For instance, we observe that individuals who spend a lot of time on social media and messaging services are more prone to feeling down and anxious. Cultivating healthy digital behavior involves promoting mindful and balanced engagement with digital devices and platforms. Encouraging employees to adopt positive habits, such as setting boundaries, practicing digital detox, and promoting digital wellness initiatives, can significantly contribute to overall well-being and work-life integration.

Our research shows that employees who are satisfied with their digital resources report greater happiness at work and higher productivity.
